I believe many homeowners have heard the term "secondary drainage" when renovating their bathrooms. What exactly is secondary drainage? How important is it? Many people may still be unaware, so today we will take a detailed look at secondary drainage.
What is secondary drainage?

Before understanding secondary drainage, let's first learn about sunken bathrooms. In fact, many new housing designs now use the sunken bathroom design method. The benefit of this is that the neighbors above and below are independent of each other. Even if something happens in the bathroom, there is little interference between them, which also reduces many disputes.

A sunken bathroom is lower than the living room and dining room floor, which makes it easier to lay pipes and is more convenient for construction. The renovation methods for sunken bathrooms usually include suspended and backfilled types. Regardless of whether it is suspended or backfilled, if there is a leak in the bathroom floor, then there will be water accumulation in the sunken layer. This leads us to the issue of secondary drainage. If secondary drainage is installed, then this accumulated water can be drained out through the secondary drainage outlet; if secondary drainage is not installed, then the accumulated water will persist, which is quite awkward.
TwoHow to construct secondary drainage?

1. Lay pipes according to needs and housing layout.
Of course, when laying pipes, care must be taken not to damage the original waterproof layer of the developer. Laying pipes is just about building a simple framework.
Many people mention that the original waterproof layer of the developer should not be damaged. However, when we do secondary drainage, the ground also needs to be leveled, and then a waterproof layer needs to be applied. Therefore, if the waterproof layer on the ground is damaged, I personally believe it is not a big problem.

2. Then create the secondary drainage outlet.
It is generally located next to the main sewage pipe, and the accumulated water from the secondary drainage flows along the main sewage pipe.

3. Leveling.
Here, leveling does not mean being horizontal. To facilitate the smooth flow of accumulated water into the secondary drainage outlet, the ground of the sunken layer should have a slope, meaning the area where the secondary drainage outlet is located should be the lowest, and other areas should gradually rise.

4. Apply a waterproof layer.
If the waterproof layer on the wall of the sunken layer is damaged, it needs to be repaired; after leveling, apply another layer of waterproofing.
5. Subsequent steps.
Basically, there are no major issues in the following steps. We need to create some grids to support the bathroom floor. Some families use expanded clay for backfilling, while others directly use a suspended method; both methods are acceptable. Then there is the construction of the bathroom floor, which also needs to be waterproofed.
Three
Benefits of secondary drainage.

Implementing secondary drainage certainly increases the number of processes, so the budget will also increase slightly, but there are many benefits.
The waterproof layer on our bathroom floor cannot ensure that it will definitely prevent water. Once the waterproof layer on the bathroom floor leaks, the accumulated water will flow into the sunken layer. If the sunken layer does not have secondary drainage, this accumulated water will continue to build up, which can easily breed bacteria and affect the hygiene of the bathroom environment. Over time, it may also impact the structural integrity of the bathroom.
Therefore, after implementing secondary drainage, this accumulated water can be drained away in a timely manner, preventing many negative impacts.
