How to construct grooves on the tile surface?
The stone-like paint groove process has become a mainstream in the market, but how should this process be constructed when facing tile substrates?
Method 1:Remove the tiles, reapply cement mortar, and then proceed with groove construction.
This method is a traditional construction method that requires a large amount of manpower and financial resources.
Currently, a more widely used construction method is to construct directly on the existing tile surface.
Method 2:Construction on the tile surface.
The smooth glazed surface of the tile has poor adhesion, requiring construction materials to have strong adhesion to act as a bridge, otherwise, hollowing may easily occur.
(1) Clean the tile surface → Roll on coarse sand interface agent → Install aluminum alloy grooves → Apply crack-resistant mortar/compound adhesive (need to apply thin layers multiple times; applying crack-resistant mortar/compound adhesive too thickly at once leads to significant shrinkage and is prone to hollowing).
(2) Mark lines on the tile surface → Determine the required width and depth for wall grooves → Embed aluminum alloy strips in the grooves → Repair and smooth the gaps → Roll on coarse sand interface agent for interface treatment on the tile surface. Both methods can directly construct the stone-like paint groove process on the tile surface, and the groove construction method can reduce the thickness of the crack-resistant mortar application, decreasing the risk of hollowing while significantly increasing labor costs. The specific method of construction should be based on local actual conditions.
The reasons for the high hollowing rate of grooves on tile surfaces are as follows: First, the tile surface has not been cleaned; Second, the interface agent is not applied properly, rolled on too thinly, leading to insufficient adhesion (apply the interface agent twice); Third, the rigidity of the crack-resistant mortar/compound adhesive used for the grooves is too strong, causing excessive shrinkage stress during the drying process. (Using standard crack-resistant mortar can greatly reduce the hollowing rate).
How to choose tile adhesive?
Why do we need to use tile adhesive?
With the improvement of tile firing technology, the water absorption rate of tiles is getting lower, making traditional cement mortar unable to adhere to tiles, as its mechanical embedding principle has become ineffective. The adhesion of low water absorption tiles must use a suction cup-like gripping method. Cement itself does not have adhesive properties, but tile adhesive contains a large amount of redispersible latex powder, which can form a strong grip on the back of the tile, firmly adhering to it.
How to choose tile adhesive?
There are many types of tile adhesives on the market, with mixed quality. We can choose based on the execution standard (JC/T 547-2017). Currently, the commonly used standards under JC/T 547-2017 are C1/C2, so we can check what standard the product complies with when purchasing, and whether it is genuine tile adhesive. Many products on the market are labeled as tile adhesive, but their execution standard may not be JC/T 547-2017, but rather premixed mortar (GB-T 25181-2019). We need to carefully check the execution standard of the product to choose genuine tile adhesive.
For different models and sizes of tiles, we should use different tile adhesives. The larger the tile, the higher the required adhesion, and the corresponding performance of the tile adhesive also varies. Small tiles (such as 30cm, 60cm, 80cm, etc.) can use C1 according to JC/T 547-2017 standard; large tiles (such as 600cm, 800cm, etc.) can use C2 according to JC/T 547-2017 standard.
Can sealing primer and base coat be mixed together?
They cannot be mixed for construction.
The construction process of stone-like paint has strict requirements, and each process and material serves a different purpose.
Sealing primer needs to penetrate and resist alkalinity, while the base coat mainly serves adhesion and color.
If sealing primer and base coat are mixed together, the permeability of the sealing primer will be insufficient, leading to a series of paint problems such as insufficient adhesion of the paint film, delamination, and water seepage. Therefore, we recommend that sealing primer and base coat should not be mixed together.
Sealing primer should not be tinted; the color paste has a certain film-forming property, and tinting will greatly reduce the permeability of the sealing primer, creating potential quality issues in construction.
